PWRDF Grow Hope Initiative

Diocese of Qu’Appelle, PWRDF join Grow Hope Saskatchewan

By Kim Umbach

PWRDF is pleased to announce that the Diocese of Qu’Appelle and PWRDF have joined Grow Hope Saskatchewan, a project of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, that raises funds to end hunger all over the world.

PWRDF’s first experience with a Grow Hope project was Anglican Grow Hope in Manitoba, in the Diocese of Rupert’s Land. It was inspiring to see how parishioners connected with local farmers and became so much more aware of the challenges facing Canada’s agriculture industry. The farmers were able to live out their faith by sharing their land, skills and livelihood to raise funds for the Foodgrains Bank. Parishioners raised funds to support the donated acreage. The best part was that the relationships grew too!

Grow Hope Saskatchewan provides yet another opportunity for relationship building, across denominations. It was started by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon along with fellow Foodgrains Bank members Mennonite Central Committee, Development and Peace and Canadian Baptist Ministries. We are grateful that they will continue to offer leadership and guidance to new members.

How Grow Hope works:

  1. Farmers agree to donate land to plant and grow a crop for Grow Hope Saskatchewan.
  2. Churches and parishioners sponsor the crop with a donation to help cover the costs of raising the crop. It costs up to $350 per acre to provide seed, fertilizer, fuel and other things needed to grow food.
  3. After harvest, farmers sell the crop and donate the proceeds to Canadian Foodgrains Bank. The proceeds can be as much as $600 per acre, or more. Crop proceeds that are used to provide emergency food assistance for people living through a crisis may be matched 4:1 through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank’s Partnership with Global Affairs Canada

Our membership in the Foodgrains Bank allows us to expand our reach around the world and make a bigger impact by collaborating with other member agencies. This ecumenical project provides a way to work together towards a common goal of ending hunger.

You’re invited…
